Young Potters 11-16

Are you aged between 11 and 16 years old and interested in learning the skill of making with clay? Here are Cardiff Pottery Workshops we are so pleased to introduce a new course specifically for 11-16 year old which covers a number of hand building techniques and throwing on the potters wheel. You will be taught by Kelly Campbell who is a qualified tutor and has over 20 years of experience of working with clay.

CLASS DETAILS

The Young Potters is a 12 week course which covers both the Hand Building and Throwing disciplines. A thorough understanding of working with clay will be taught alongside helping to develop creative thinking. Each lesson will start with clay preparation, followed by a demonstration by the tutor. You will then have time to practice what has been demonstrated and guidance will be offered where needed. 

Skills you will learn over the 12 weeks:

  • Clay preparation and wedging.

  • Setting up your wheel.

  • Centering the clay.

  • Making a bowl.

  • Making a cup. Including how to make and attach a handle.

  • Turning and finishing your pieces ready for firing.

  • Slab rolling and compression.

  • Working to a template.

  • Coil building.

  • Pinch pot technique.

  • Surface textures and detailing.

  • Fettling and preparation for firing.

  • Slip decoration and Glazing

Working with clay can be messy. We supply aprons but it is probably best if you come to the classes in clothes and footwear you don't mind getting dirty. No watches or jewellery to be worn. No phones to be used whilst working and you may want to tie your hair back in preparation.

YOUNG POTTERS - FURTHER PRACTICE

For those who have already completed the first beginners 12 weeks Young Potters course. Further Practice will be aimed at looking to develop more in-depth projects and practice. Classes will continue to be structured and led by one of our tutors to guide them through each project. The aim of our Young Potters - Further Practice is to continue to build on the skills learned alongside developing their art language through our exciting projects.
