Paul's sculptural vessels, crafted by hand, are inspired by our connection with nature's cycles and seasons. The vessel's symbolic form, reminiscent of the built environment, is of particular fascination to him. He juxtaposes contrasting textures created by the opposing forces of growth and decay, which interact, disrupt, and transform the sense of order. Such textures can be achieved through the use of volatile and blistering glazes. Paul's relationship with clay and glaze materials is centred on the challenge of expressing himself through their innate qualities.

During his presentation, Paul will employ demonstrations, discussions, and slides to share the technical, aesthetic, and philosophical aspects of his work. He will cover his approach to hand-building and glazing the surface of his distinctive cylinder and ellipse forms.

Join the esteemed ceramist, Geoffrey Swindell. In this comprehensive three-hour masterclass, you'll gain invaluable insights into the theories and practices of his craft. I am currently working on a series of new pieces that draw their inspiration from abandoned places. Layering textures and coloured slips to create the impression of long neglected human habitation. All the pieces are slab built in very thin terracotta. I apply the initial texture when the slabs are still flat using a series of Lino cuts that are pressed into the surface. The slabs are then rolled around a foam cylinder and assembled and in some cases deformed. Finally I apply layers of coloured slips, initially using a brush and then using the slip transfer method. The work is glazed internally but left unglazed on the exterior surfaces.

Demonstration of Pottery Techniques with a "Blue Peter" Twist

During Jeremys demonstration, he will create a teapot, showcasing the process of throwing and joining various components to form the body. With slip cast handles and spouts, the finished piece will come together before your eyes. I will bring parts at different stages of construction, much like the iconic "Blue Peter" show. This allows me to put together a finished product in whatever time is available.

Jeremy will also discuss his vast experience of promoting and selling his pottery at shows and via Exhibitions.
