Throwing Classes

Come and join us at Cardiff Pottery Workshops for the ever popular throwing classes. Master the art of the potters wheel in our fun and friendly studio with our highly skilled tutors guiding you all the way. You will work to a specially developed 6 week plan which has been devised to take you step by step through the process of throwing for beginners. Alongside this we offer 20% discount to those who are returning to develop their skills. Alternatively, if you would prefer more tailored tuition you can opt for some personal tuition or join our Sunday morning sessions which are unstructured and tailored for those who cannot commit to a 6 week course. Details and prices are listed below...

Class Details

During the 6 week throwing course you will work on your own potters wheel. Each lesson will start with clay preparation, followed by a demonstration on the wheel by the tutor. You will then have time to practice what has been demonstrated and guidance will be offered where needed. If you need a break, the kettle is always on with tea and coffee in abundance so please do help yourselves...or ask the tutor to make a brew!

Skills you will learn:

  • Clay preparation and wedging.

  • Setting up your wheel.

  • Centering the clay.

  • Making a bowl.

  • Making a cup. Including how to make and attach a handle.

  • Turning and finishing your pieces ready for firing.

  • Glazing and Slip Decoration.

Throwing can be very messy, particularly when you are starting out. We supply aprons but it is probably best if you come to the classes in clothes and footwear you don't mind getting dirty. No watches or jewellery to be worn and you may want to tie your hair back in preparation.

You can book your place right away by selecting from the drop down options, the day and time that is suitable for you. Please note the course must be paid for in full before attending. If you miss a class this may be made up on the following course for the same week missed (depending on available space). All work is fired and will be ready to collect two weeks after the completion of your course. If you would like to glaze your pieces this can be done by booking onto one of our glazing sessions, usually held on a Sunday.
